Arrived in country thru Saigon Jul66. Went to Cam Ranh Bay. We patrolled on 43 boat until we were sent to Subic Bay to outfit new boats. We rode Gunston Hall LSD-5 back to Cam Ranh Bay with 81 boat. We were there until Nov 66 then we were sent to Da Nang where we picked up 20 boat. Then to Chu Lai where we spent most of our time. BM1 Spencer and GMG3 Dix have expired. Have been in contact with LT Fulton lives in New York (city evades me at present), RM3 Lee lives in San Diego, SN Bettencourt lives in North Las Vegas.

I join the Navy March 12 1952. EN "A" school in San Diego. I had many different ships APA 239 Norfolk VA, USNRTC Cleveland Ohio, as an instructor after the Korean war ended. Reenlisted and went to Sub School dropped color blind and can't swim. AS17 in San Diego I was sent to EN "C" school for 12 weeks and wound up staying for 32 weeks. Instead of going back to the Nereus AS17 I was sent to a minesweeper. I made two tours in Vietnam on the USS Conquest MSO 488 1961-1962 1963-1964. Went to a insurv program training Turkish Sailor how to operate Gas Turbines on a MSI (minesweeper-inland) 1968 I was sent to the USS Bold MSO 424 Charleston. Received orders to swift boat school. Great. I planned to retire so I was to make EN1 in October but being in the hospital and 80% deal with two ruptured ear drums that made my Navy career very short. Feb 14 1969 I was discharged. I have attended 3 Swift boat reunions and met some people especially John Hill and Tommy Frances and their wives. We kept in touch since then. My Officer LTJG Hudson was to me a fine officer. But I had two other officer on the Conquest Mr. Godbehere and Mr Rowalt in which I keep in touch with. Mr. Godbehere is a hero from PBR's and can be for in the Brown Water Navy book.

I was stationed at Danang first at Camp Tien Shaw. I was there when the Off. from Fl was shot as he stepped onto the aft of PCF 13. From there, we went to Cat Lo to pick up the new Mark 3's and take them down to An Thoi and SEAFLOAT. While there we got some minor damage from AK47's. Two of us were short and we went to Cat LO where I left the boat and went to NAVCOMSTA. GREECE. While at Danang we went through seas 11-12 feet high. Down south we worked from the Jennings County. Three years ago we moved from Fl to Tn. I would like to hear from people from those areas and times.

People don't believe me when I tell them the weather forecasting consisted of sending out a Swift. If it came back half sunk and the windows all busted out they would wait a few hours and send out another one. If it made it to its patrol area then everybody could go. We all hated to go to 5 Charlie (Phan Thiet) because it was nasty all time and we would sometimes get stuck in Phan Rang for days until the weather cleared. I was sent over June 1970 as support and worked on radios and radar from swifts in Sa Dec until swifts were transferred to Vietnamese Navy. In January 1971 I became an advisor and sent to My Tho (Dong Tam) working for Coastal Flotilla IV, LCDR McCormack was in charge then. I later spent some time on an APL at the Cambodian border then off to Nam Can (Solid Anchor) where I finished out my time. I recognized some of the names under the advisors list for Solid Anchor/Coastal Flotilla IV, but my name is not there. We would go out with two swifts manned by Vietnamese crew members and one American advisor. Most of my time was spent assisting Vietnamese technicians working on radios and radars off the boats. We would also have to do base bunker watches on our duty days. My service was not spectacular compared to many of my contemporaries, but I was riding a swift that got hit by rocket fire (lost one transmission) and that was a memorable day, the best part was that no one was killed. I had been fired on before, but that was the only time the boat I was riding was hit. I spent a total of nine years in the Navy and have continued to work for the Navy as a civilian for over 27 years.

I tried my best to convey the service of my crew and other Swift Boat Sailors in a book, "Cat Lo, a memoir of invincible youth." We thought we were invincible, but some of us were not. We were fighting for the freedom of the South Vietnamese who were caught in the middle of war without option of neutrality. But sometimes it was difficult to know: Who was the enemy and who was not. We also discovered that the seas of South Vietnam were often more threatening than the Viet Cong. We lost boats and men to these violent seas. Swift Boat Sailors discovered war's indelible lesson for those who survived: Life is too precious to waste! Commander Streuli, skipper of Coastal Division 13, the Black Cats based at Cat Lo, wrote: "I have never ceased to be amazed at what was asked of these men and what did. To this day I am proud to brag about each and every one."

OinC LTJG Ed Guzis, LPO EN1 Jerry Husband(deceased), BM2 (Denny, I think) Johnson, RD2 (Willie, I think) Johnson, GMGSN Robert Lake, and myself, RD2 Jewel I. Stogner. All have been located except the two Johnsons. None can remember boat numbers! I will offer some incidences in hopes someone can remember and offer clues as to our boat number. I would like very much to get us listed with proper boat number on CTF 115 crewmembers list.
 1. July- Sep.67, time frame, operating out of Cam Ranh We had to share escort/guard duty with other crews over a VN patrol craft hard aground on a rock formation south of Cam Ranh.
 2. Same time frame, after providing fire support to ground forces at Phan Rang the VN forces returned to us an unexploded 81MM round they dug out of the chest of a female civilian.
 3. Oct.-Nov.67 time frame operating out of Cua Viet during a rdvz. with a USN/USCG support ship offshore our radar ant. got caught on a sea painter and ripped off.
 4. Dec.67 detached from An Thoi to Song Ong Doc to provide support to US Army Advisors. First patrol were sent up river to provide fire support to a ground patrol, successfully captured/detained two sampans and approx a doz. suspects, one later determined to be a VC/NVN paymaster with a large amt of cash. In spite of big success we, our, skippers were reprimanded for proceeding too far up river. We shared Christmas dinner with the Army Advisors. Intel gained from that venture led to another exploration immediately after Tet Offensive cease fire early 68 in that very same river.
 5. Mar.-May, 68 we participated in a waterborne search for remains of a C130 crash among the small islands immediately S.E. of the APL at An Thoi.
 6. May-June 68 we were one of several patrols that took fire from supposed embedded VC/NVN forces from a small mountain/big hill on the mainland N.E. of Phou Quoc Island, N.W. of Rach Gia. This resulted in a pounding of that area with one of our Navy Rocket/Missile ships.
 7. We departed Viet Nam Jul.68. If anyone can remember any of these incidences and perhaps remember the boat numbers involved it might be helpful.

I was assigned as initial instructor staff at PCF training school, Phib Base, Coronado, and immediately sent TAD to Mare island to build the PBR school, and stayed there for three months, along with many others initially assigned to PCF training. Some remained at Maris when the NIOTC was commissioned. After three years of instructing in such things as "Rules of engagement", "Aircraft recognition and building up a callus on my finger from operating the signaling gun teaching flashing light (we finally figured out how to use TV for that), and having made both SMC and Bos'n (W-1), I received orders to USS Brule (AKL-28). After flying in-country and a short stay at the Annapolis Hotel, I picked up the ship at Cat Lo. As I walked down the pier, I was greeted by a number of sailors who had recently been students of mine back at the school. After assuming my duties as Cargo Officer aboard Brule, I spent a year delivering supplies from Saigon and ammo from Vung Tau to all the river patrol bases in the Mekong and Bassac rivers as well as the Market Time base at An Thoi. We stopped at Dong Tam, the LST in the Ham Luong river, Vinh Long, the LST in the Co Chien river (7 rocket hits and a lot of small arms), Sa Dec, YRBM-17 (PBR Base), PBR Mobile Base 2, Binh Thuy, and An Thoi. The two LST's on station for almost my entire tour were the Garrett County and Hunterdon County. In an interesting side-bar, on our last delivery to the Garrett County, I found their new CO to be LCDR Clancy, who was my OinC during my TAD at Mare Island.

I was aboard the USS Acme MSO 508. I was one of the motor whale boat crew that helped retrieve the bodies from the 19 boat. Jim asked for a statement and I gave him what I remembered. Thing I remember most is pulling up one of the boys, his eyes were open and he was staring right at me. I was 22 at the time and 41 years later I can still see him.

Unable to find any after action reports concerning the time we had the 14 boat. Almost sank the first patrol coming out of DaNang. Seacock had been left open, I held EN1 by ankles so he could go head first into engine compartment and close it. Water up to valve covers on engines but they keep running till water was pumped out. Several small firefights, Chu Lai and in the small bay south of Cua Viet river base. Radar guided 10in gun blew out our forward windows near DMZ one night, North fired one round and missed us by less than 100 ft, in the dark. Remember watching the CG go into port when we had to stay on station with 30 to 59 ft seas. Our crew was split up when we had a serious problem on our boat, one crew member came through the boat with a live grenade to throw at a large shark, fell in the pilothouse and luckily the grenade fell overboard before going off. Large dent in portside hull from close by explosion. Division commander split our crew up and we all finished our tours helping train new incoming crews.

PCF 58 was transported from Subic Bay by LSD to DaNang, PCFs 57 through 61 moved to Qui Nhon to set up PCF Division 15, operated port and starboard patrols to start and went to 3 day rotation when more boats arrived in the Division. BM1 Ellig, LTJG Lindwall, GMG2 Sanchez, SN Jenkins, forgotten RM original crew. OINC WIA in leg June. Base facilities primitive to begin, with head being cut into 55 gallons drum, showers were gravity fed 55 gallons drums, Quonset huts at first for all buildings, later a chow hall and head facilities built to improve base.

OIC LTJG Morton Hodgson, Atlanta, GA - RD2 Charles Russell, Montgomery, AL - BM3 Barry Whitesell, South Carolina - GMG2 Tommy Francis, Booneville, ARK. We had different engineman during our tour, we lost one in March 1969, in an ambush on the Cua Dai river. He was wounded and Medevac out, bad case of CRS, don't remember his name. EM2 John Phillips became our EM until we went south to Chu Lai where he got into some trouble and was sent south where he was badly wounded and medevac home. The four of us stayed together our whole tour. In Sept. of 1969 I became the MAA at DaNang Swiftboat Barracks. I didn't ride the boats after that, except when they needed a Gunnersmate to fill in.

I'm not a "real" Swiftee, but almost! I was detached from duty as a VNN Junk Force advisor, and reported Coronado on Labor Day '65 for Swift Boat training. Went on a few shakedown cruises with the BSU-1 instructors, and shared a head in the BOQ with John Broglio before I was suddenly and mysteriously ordered to PACV training. Spent most of '66 at Cat Lo with PACV DIV 107 which included a lot of laughing and scratching with Bill Clancy and PCF DIV 103 (including now Rear Admiral Ruck).

I visited your site today for the first time as I was searching for a "kid" I have not seen in over 50 years who I was recently told had been a Swiftee. I served on PCF-67 from 6-69 to 12-69. I began at Quin Nhon, then went to Cat Lo three months later. In December I volunteered for Operation Sea Float, and spent the last 6 months of my duty there as lead gunners mate aboard the barges. LTJG William S. Alexander was boat officer, Edward Kline was quartermaster, Richard Weeks was radioman, Robert W. Anderson was engineman, and I was gunners mate. Did I forget someone? Well, here's to better times.

Just checking in again, found something I didn't know was on this site. I checked out "The published swift boat" and scrolled down to magazines and clicked on the Sea Classics, volume 8 number one Jan 1975 and to my surprise, on page 3&4 the 82 boat is pulling up along side a LST to get more ammo and I'm driving the PCF, Ltgj Bishop, GMG3 Taylor and EN3 Drogoz and in the two photo's of the 82 boat. Larry, thanks for posting these, never knew someone took our picture in Nov 68 off Ca Mau.
